Welcome to the international section of HOVUmc (Huisart Opleiding Vrije Universiteit medisch centrum transl. Department of Vocational Training for general practice of the VU University medical center).

The materials presented on this subsite were formerly located at gpsupport.nl; an initiative by Joop Stam and Wim Willems, two Amsterdam based general practitioners, connected to HOVUmc. HOVUmc adopted gpsupport.nl and incorporated it into her own site to create an international platform for the distribution of GP oriented training and teaching materials.

Originally gpsupport.nl was established with the purpose of providing teaching and learning resources for general practitioners, GP-residents and GP-trainers in Romania. During their visits to Romania Joop and Wim were struck by both the difficult circumstances of GP’s in Romania as well as their eagerness and enthusiasm of GP’s to improve their situation. At that time there were precious little GP oriented training materials available and a clear lack of structure in the organization of postgraduate education. Gpsupport.nl aimed to fill that gap by providing training materials to be used in groups of GP’s and GP-residents.

HOVUmc established lasting with the Department of Vocational Training for General Practice of Craiova University in Romania. This cooperation is still going strong with mutual visits and yearly training sessions of Romanian GP-trainers by their Dutch counterparts.

In the mean time the international connections of HOVUmc have branched out to Surinam, Aruba and Georgia.
